Stamp
I really like this piece simply because of it's practicality. I decided not to glaze because the letters are very sharp and make a clear impact on the clay. I mirrored the letters so it would read correctly once I stamped it.
Unit 1
Small Painted/Face
In this piece I combined projects. It was my first real piece of the year and I am very proud of how it came out. Once it was fired I thought it would be a waste to just do it one color, so I painted the intricate design with underglaze.
Pinch pot (with a use)
I like how this piece turned out, however it's a bit sloppy. I could have done a thicker coat of glase and spent more time smoothing it out. Although it does work successfully as a small pot for plants, hence the holes in the bottom for drainage.
Unit 2
2 Pinch Pots Togeher
I am relatively proud of this piece, however I could have made it less lumpy. I love how the glaze turned out but I should have made the dimples deeper to get a better effect.
Pinch Pot Cut in Half
This is one of my first attempts at a pinch pot, I was struggling a lot with the pressure of my pinches at first, but when I discovered a gentler touch is more effective I got better. This specific pinch pot's bottom is too thick, probably because I overcompensated from going too thin in previous attempts
Unit 3
Historically Inspired Relief Tile
I am somewhat proud of this piece. I made it as a gift and I meant for the glaze to be a more maroon and green, but it kind of came out like throw up. I think the image itself came out good, it is inspired by old french art of cats, with the colors meant to be from an art deco color pallet. The hole for a nail turned out well, I was worried it was going to shrink and not be functional.
Coil Pot
This coil Pot came out just fine. The pot itself shrunk quite a bit after it's first firing, which disrupted my plans of using it as a large vase. So instead I decided to experiment with purple because I am not a big fan of the coil pot aesthetic anyway.
Sgraffito Darted Mug
For this piece, I am mostly proud of the overall construction. It was my first time darting and first time making a handle. I like how the foot came out, I sort of wanted a layered, wonky look. As for the design, I carved an image of an otter/walrus. I wish I chose a different underglaze so it wasn't so light and it was more visible.
Slump Mold
This piece is one of my least favorites. It feels rushed and lazy. I only did one or two layers of glaze and it shows. The overall construction is them only redeeming factor. However I am glad I learned how to do this technique, I will probably use it in the future but its not my favorite.

Handles on a Piece
This piece is my favorite I have thrown. The size fits my hands, which is difficult to find. I got the inspiration for the handle while I was in a small shop on the 1. The shop was called "Pie Ranch" and a lady was selling her homemade pottery. I am proud of it.
Plan: small mug with large handle for my hands
-Midfire glaze to get the two tone
Final
Kazuo Umezu, known as the father of horror manga, is a huge deal in Japan, with his work even featured in major museums like the Yokohama Museum of Art. Born in Wakayama in 1936, he started drawing manga as a teenager and published his first work while still in high school. After moving to Tokyo, he became famous for his creepy, surreal style in works like The Drifting Classroom and Orochi. His ability to mix horror, tension, and drama has influenced countless artists. For my 3D sculpture based on Zoku-Shingo, I used clay and wire to recreate his bold and eerie style. The boy figure didn’t turn out great since I never fired him and rushed his construction at home to save time. The girl figure was fired, so her construction and underglaze came out better, but it still wasn’t what I hoped for. This project taught me to be less hard on myself and better at managing my time. My research included the Kazuo Umezu Official Website and Manga: Masters of the Art by Timothy Lehmann.
